개막작 <해안선> 주연배우 장동건 인터뷰

<해안선>은 장동건에겐 일종의 ‘모험’이었다. 화사한 미모의 스타급 배우가 폭력이 화두인 저예산 작가 감독의 영화에 ‘자진해서’ 출연한다는 것은, 요즘 영화계 풍토에서 상상하기 힘든 일이다. “그동안 상업 영화의 주인공 캐릭터에는 일정한 선이 그어져 있다는 것을 느꼈어요. 그 선을 한번 넘고 싶었어요. 우리가 일상적으로 드러내지 않는, 어떤 감정의 극한을 표출해 보고 싶었죠. <나쁜 남자>를 보고, 바로 저거다, 했어요. ”

<해안선>에서 장동건은 민간인을 오인사살하고 미쳐가는 강상병을 연기했다. 간첩을 잡겠다는 순진한 일념이 광기로 돌변하는 과정을, 그는 섬뜩하게 그리고 처연하게 그려내고 있다. 장동건은 그것을 크랭크인 직전에 있었던 2박3일의 지옥 훈련 덕으로 돌린다. “무척 힘들었어요. 강상병의 상황을 미리 몸으로 느껴 본 거죠. 체력적으로 그렇게 극한적인 상황에 몰리면, 사람이 미칠 수도 있겠구나, 하는 생각이 들었어요.” 그는 김기덕 감독과의 작업에 대해 “궁합이 꽤 잘 맞았다”고 하면서도, “도시 총각이 시골 처녀 마음을 흔들어 놓듯, 괜히 내 개인의 객기로 감독님의 개성과 색깔이 흐려졌을까봐 걱정”이라고 조심스러워한다. 그 걱정, 단단히 붙들어 매시고, 아픈 몸 빨리 추스리시길!

“Reaching the Limits and Feeling Vulnerable ”

Interview with Jang, Dong-Kun,

Prior to the premiere screening of , Jang Dong-Kun had been extremely ill. Due to enteritis combined with flu and extreme fatigue, porridge and supplementary shots had been his daily nutrient for past 4 days before he arrived in Pusan. His illness couldn't have purely been an aftereffect of since much time has gone by since its production ended. However, perhaps it could've been somewhat related.

To Jang, was a risk. In modern day film industry, a handsome, top-class actor voluntarily requesting to be part of a film by a low-budget director, with a notorious reputation for his violent films, is almost unheard of. “Playing a character in a commercial film has its limited boundaries. And I wanted to cross them. I wanted to express the extreme emotions, which are not usually shown on a surface of a person. When I watched , I said, ‘That's it!’“

In , Jang plays a soldier(Kang), who loses his sanity after killing a civilian by mistake. He delivers a frightful and pitiful portrait of a man's psychological journey from a naive will of wanting to catch a spy to a complete lunacy. He gives credit to 3 day ‘hell training’ before the shooting started. “It was really tough. I physically experienced Kang's situation. And I understood how one can lose his sanity when he's cornered in such extreme situation, psychologically, as well as, physically.” He said he enjoyed working with director Kim Ki-Duk. However, he was concerned that he might've “blurred Kim's unique color and characteristics with his rashness” in this film.
