“우린 아주 집요해요.” 35개국에서 온 140명의 판타스틱한 신부감을 부천의 관객들과 만나게 하기 위해 이 두명의 매파는, 해외영화제를 ‘보따리 장수’처럼 다니면서 ‘돈안되는 영화제는 NO!’라고 외치는 마켓의 장사꾼들에게 문전박대 당하기 여러번, 한손에 카달로그 한손엔 핸드폰 들고 정말 집요하게 아부하고 협박(?)했다는 기억을 먼저 풀어놓았다. 인디포럼 영화제 기획, 부산영화제 프로그래밍 팀장을 거쳐 올해 처음 판타지의 배에 오른 김영덕 프로그래머는 호금전 회고전의 전반적인 진행을 맡았고 1, 2회 프로그램 코디네이터를 거쳐 3회부터 올해까지 프로그래머로 부천에 뼈를 묻은 송유진 프로그래머는 다년 간의 노하우로 조직의 중추적 역할을 담당했다. 마치 몇살 터울 자매처럼 대답을 서로 미루지 않은채 적절히 나누어 하는 그들의 모습에서 프로그래밍 과정을 짐작할 수 있었다.
작년과 비교해 볼 때 어떤것들이 달라졌나.
송유진 더 재미있다.(웃음) 작년은 프로그래머 외에 많은 모자를 쓰고 일을 해야했다. 수석 프로그래머와 사무국장이 다 떠나고 여러모로 열악한 상황이라 개인적으로 부담도 컸다. 결국 4회는 ‘올해가 없으면 5회는 없다’는 마음으로 서바이벌 모드로 전환시키고 과감하게 진행한 영화제였던 것같다. ‘제한구역’ ‘메가토크’ ‘지정좌석제’ 등이 모두 극한 상황에서 나온 아이디어였는데 부작용도 많았지만 결과적으로 새로운 시도였고 잘한 선택이었다는 생각이 든다. 그런 것에 비하면 올해는 정말로 편하게 본연의 업무인 프로그래밍에만 집중할 수 있었다.
김영덕 모든 이들이 원하고 있던 회고전이었는데 다행히 <와호장룡>이 터져 시기적으로 적절해졌다. 필름 수급의 어려움이야 왜 없었겠냐만은 제작자이자 호금전 영화의 배우였던 쉬펑이나 홍콩영화제 회고전 필자였던 스티븐 테오와 피터 리스트를 만나는 등 여러 군데서 운도 많이 따라 주었다. 아쉬운 것은 쉬펑이 얼마전 살고 있는 맨션 계단에서 굴러 허리를 다치는 바람에 영화제에 참석하지 못했다는 것이다. 하지만 본인이 언제고 부천에 꼭 오겠다는 의사를 밝히고 있어서 내년에는 심사위원 자격으로 초청할 수 있기를 기대하고 있다.
일은 어떤 식으로 분담하나?
송·김 보통 공동으로 상의하고 조율하는 편이다. 취향이 접목되는 부분도 많지만 다른 부분도 많기 때문에 오히려 균형잡힌 의견이 나온다. 객원으로 일한 정초신 프로그래머는 초반작업과 ‘메이드 인 코리아’ 부분을 담당했다. 사실 <시체유기 자장가> <지킬건 지킨다> 같은 한글 제목을 정 프로그래머가 붙였는데 “한글 제목이 더 죽인다”는 말을 많이 들었다. 역시 ‘흥행감독’은 다른것 같다.(웃음) 세 사람이 다 다른 스타일인데 이상하게 잘 맞았다.
여성 프로그래머로서의 장점이 있나?
송유진 여성 특유의 ‘육감’에 따른 초이스가 관객의 취향에 더욱 가깝게 다가가는 듯하다. 그리고 어떤 부분 억압적으로 살 수밖에 없는 여자들에겐 기본적인 ‘공포’가 존재한다. 그것이 호러와 판타지 장르를 아우르는 판타스틱영화제와 통하는 부분이 있고.

Tell us what differences there are from the year before.
Cassie Yoo It's much more fun. Last year I had to wear so many other hats other than the programmer's hat. The Chief programmer and director were not present so we were at a very tight edge and had a lot on our shoulders. In the end we vowed to make our best of the situation, thinking 'There won't be a 5th PiFan if we can't survive the 4th." 'Forbidden Zone', 'Megatalk' and a new seat-assigning system were some ideas thought up at the last minute.
The Retrospective of King Hu, well known as the master of Martial Arts Films especially catches the eye. Could you tell us something about that?
Ellen Kim A lot of people wanted that kind of retrospective and luckily Ang Lee's 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' was a sensation, so we decided the time was right to have a retrospective on him. Of course we had some difficulty in obtaining the film, but luckily Madame Hsu Feng, an all time favorite actress who starred in King Hu's films agreed to meet us. We also met the writers for the Hong Kong Film Festival's Retrospective category, Stephen Teo and Peter Rist. Unfortunately, just recently Madame Hsu Feng fell down her mansion stairs, injuring her back and could not come to the festival, but expressed that she wanted to be a part of the festival, so we hope to have her here next year as a judge.
How do you two divide the work?
Kim Usually we discuss things together and work things out. We find ourselves having the same views in some areas, and different ones, too. I think the role of a publicity director is a little different. These three have their differences, but that doesn't stop them from getting along well.
What are the benefits of being a female programmer?
Yoo I think the inherent instincts of a woman reach out to the audience more easily. Just by living in this world as a 'woman' is pretty much horrific itself, and I think that's what coincides with the Fantastic Film Festival's horror and fantasy genres.
