수면 부족은 모든 영화제가 피해 갈 수 없는 전염병. 약속장소에 조금 충혈된 눈으로 들어온 올라프 이텐바흐 감독도 지난 사흘간 잔 시간을 꼽는 손가락이 한 손을 넘지 않는단다. 사진 기자의 다양한 포즈 요구에 “내가 우리 배우들 괴롭힌 것을 생각하면 당해도 싸다”는 그의 논리를 흉내내자면, 영화제 첫 심야상영 관객들의 심장을 흔들어 깨운 <악령의 군단>의 감독인 그의 불면은 불평할 수 없는 노릇. 하지만 피로를 염려하며 질문을 던지자 “아니, 이게 바로 내가 여기 온 이유”라며 열성적으로 답한다. 18살에 비디오로 찍은 처녀작의 배급에 직접 뛰어들고 22살에 자기 영화를 금지한 검열과 부대낀, 영화와 더불어 크고 강해진 영화 청년답게.
<악령의 군단>은 스플래터, 액션, 오컬트, 코미디를 망라하고 있다. 감독으로서 이력이 궁금하다. 영화학교는 다닌 적 없다. 13살 때부터 특수 메이크업에 관심을 가지고 실험했다. 18살 때 만든 첫 영화 <검은 과거>가 한 잡지에서 호평받아 손수 비디오테이프를 ‘배급’하기도 했다. 두 번째 영화 <불타는 달>은 노골적인 폭력 묘사로 독일 내 상영이 금지됐다. 덕분에 언론의 스포트라이트를 받고 독일 호러영화 팬들이 졸지에 단결하는 사태가 빚어졌다. 다음 영화 <추락 천사>가 시체스, 산 세바스찬, 브뤼셀 판타스틱 영화제에서 주목받으면서 치과기공사를 그만두고 전업 감독이 됐다.
다른 영화에서 원용된 이미지와 설정이 즐비하다. <악령의 군단>은 내가 좋아하는 호러 영화들에 바치는 트리뷰트 묶음이다. <황혼에서 새벽까지>의 공간, <트루 로맨스>의 살인 장면, <언더 시즈>에서 스티븐 시걸이 분한 무서운 주방장 캐릭터의 반영들이 들어있다. 좋아하는 작품으로는 <슬리피 할로우>, 메이크 업부터 스토리까지 영화 만들기 실제에 많은 가르침을 준 피터 잭슨, 클라이브 바커의 영화가 있는가 하면 <브레이브 하트>와 <글래디에이터> <하늘과 땅>에도 열광했다. 영화는 감정의 예술이며, 그건 호러도 마찬가지라고 생각한다.
<악령의 군단>에서 다룬 ‘영생’의 문제에 관심이 많나. 판타스틱 장르에서 가장 흥미로운 요소는 삶과 죽음, 그리고 고통이다. 그리고 고통스런 삶의 시간이 끝나는 죽음 이후의 무엇이 있을까는, 죽음 이후의 ‘무’를 받아들일 수 없는 나를 포함한 모든 인간의 관심사다.
두 편의 신작 프로젝트가 있다고 했는데. 9월에 크랭크 인하는 새 영화는 중세 괴담과 환생, 현대의 마피아 스토리가 고리처럼 얽혀있는 아주 도발적이고 센, 피투성이 영화다. 장르 패러디가 아닌 진지한 접근을 통해, 호러 장르를 넘어서는 호러를 만들고 싶다. 이란에서 찍을 다음 영화 <이블 라이징>은 좀비 호러 코미디다.

Exploring the Edge of Horror

is a movie that combines splatter, action, occult and comedy. Could you please tell us about your personal history? I?e never attended film school. I was interested in special effect make-up from the age of 13. I made my first film when I was 18. A magazine appraised it, and I found myself ?istributing?my own film in videotape by order. My second film was banned in Germany for graphic violence. Thanks to this incident, the press was all over me, bringing German horror movie fans together. My following film was noticed at various international film festivals, so I quit my job as a dentist technician and became a full time director.
There are rows of images and plots invoked from other movies. is a bundle of tributes to all of my favorite horror films. It contains ? space, ? murder scene, and the reflection of Steven Segal playing an indignant, scary chief in . I like , Peter Jackson?(who taught me the actual stuff on movies from the make-up to the story) and Clive Barker? movies.
You dealt with the idea of living in eternity in . The most interesting element of the fantastic genre is life, death and pain. And what lies beyond the painful human life, an ?mptiness?after it ends, is a matter of interest everyone.
About the new projects you are working on. A medieval age episode with satan, reincarnation and a modern mafia story are all entangled in a series of chains in my new film which will extremely provocative gory film. The filming will start on September. I want to transcend the limit of horror genre not by making a parody but by a serious approach. After that, I will be in the production of , zombie horror comedy which will be shot in Iran with a support from Iranian Government.
