경제 불황으로 사회 시스템이 붕괴하자 전통적인 가치관도 엉켜버린 근 미래. 학생들의 학교 보이콧이 늘어나며 누구도 어른을 공경하거나 신뢰하지 않자 정부는 배틀 로얄 법안을 발표한다. 이는 무작위로 중학교 한 학급을 선발해 무인도에서 3일간 한 사람이 살아남을 때까지 서로 죽고 죽이게 하는 법. 누구는 자살하고 누구는 살인자가 되면서 소년, 소녀들이 지옥도를 그리는 동안 아이들의 숨겨진 꿈과 애증도 드러난다. 기이한 행동의 교사를 연기하는 기타노 다케시의 서정적 광기는 이 영화의 백미다.

In the near future, the society system collapses from an economic recession, tangling its traditional values. As students start rejecting school, and none of them respect elders let alone confides in them, the government announces an act called Battle Royale According to this law, a middle school class is chosen randomly and the students are forced to kill one another on an inhabited island for three days until only one person is left. Some begin to commit suicide while others become killers. The boys and girls reveal their hidden dreams, love and hatred through drawing a map of hell. The eccentric teacher, Kitano Takeshiㄳ poetic madness is by all means the essence of this film.
