“마지막이라 생각하며, 15일만에 찍은 데뷔작”

-현장경험도 없는 신인감독이 15일만에 이 영화를 완성했다는 사실이 믿어지지 않는다.

=처음엔 다른 제작사가 열흘을 제안해서 거절했는데, 골든 하베스트가 보름을 주겠다고 해서 다행이라고 생각했다. 문제는 골든 하베스트가 처음 이틀 찍은 분량을 보고 제작 여부를 결정하겠다고 한 것이었다. 이틀 찍으면서 마구 울었다(웃음). 마지막이 될 거라고 믿었으니까. 다행히 영화를 만들 수 있게 됐지만, 시간이 없어서 밥도 못먹고 잠도 못잤다. 나도 생각도 깊게 하고 싶었고, 연기자들하고 대화도 하고 싶었는데(웃음).

-그런 점에서 바트와 추엔은 감독과 프로듀서같다. 킬러인 바트는 빨리 살인을 끝내려고 하고, 추엔은 멋진 영화를 찍기 위해 살인을 오래 끌기를 바란다.

=맞다. 거기엔 재미있는 아이러니가 하나 더 있다. 킬러는 자신을 숨기고 싶어하지만, 감독은 자신을 널리 알려야 한다.

-열 아홉 살 때부터 시나리오를 썼다고 들었다. 영화계에 상당히 일찍 입문한 편인데.

=학교를 졸업하고 내가 잘하는 일이 뭔가 생각해보니, 없었다. <영웅본색> 같은 영화를 만들고 싶어서 카메라를 들고 다녔기 때문에 감독이 되기로 결정했다. 먼저 시나리오를 쓰면서 편집 감각을 익히다가 코미디 방송 대본을 썼다. 누군가 감독이 되려면 연기를 알아야 한다고 해서 연기도 시작했다. 그리고 마침내 감독이 됐다.

-<너는 찍고, 나는 쏘고>는 메시지와 재미를 동시에 얻는 유머감각이 돋보인다.

=친구들은 내가 웃긴 대본을 쓰는 게 신기하다고 한다. 난 이해받지 못하는 것이 싫어서 평소에 말을 별로 하지 않고 전부 시나리오에 쓴다. 그렇다고 코미디만 하고 싶은 건 아니다. 지금 홍콩 제작자들은 “홍콩엔 영화말고도 울 일이 너무 많다”면서(웃음) 코미디만 원하지만, 내 다음 영화는 비련의 애정 영화가 될 거다.

“Shot in 15 Days, Thinking It Was Over.”

Interview with Edmond Pang, Director of

Director Edmond Pang shot his first feature in 15 days. His debut feature is a story about a manic depressed hitman, together with a film student, delivering a videotape of the murder for his clients.

- It's hard to believe you finished shooting in 15 days with no previous production experience.

= When Golden Harvest proposed 15 day shooting schedule, I actually thought I was fortunate, since the other previous production company had proposed only 10 days to shoot, which I had to declined. However, the problem was, they said they would give their final answer after seeing the rushes of first 2 day shooting. I cried at the end of the second day, thinking it was over. (laughs) Luckily, I made my film but because I was so busy, I didn't even have time to eat or sleep. I wish I had more time to give it more thoughts and also, to converse with the actors. (laughs)

- In that aspect, Bart and Chuen are like a director and a producer. Bart, the hitman, wants to finish the murder as quickly as possible, but, Chuen, the film student, wants to prolong the murder to get the best cinematic 'masterpiece.'

= That's right. And, there is another funny irony to it. The hitman wants to hide himself but the filmmaker wants to make himself known to everybody.

- has a great sense of humor, that delivers film's message and its comical elements together.

= I'm not much of a talker around people. So when my friends found out I was writing a comedy, they thought it was odd. Nevertheless, I don't want to make just comedies. Now days, Hong Kong producers insist making comedy films, because according to them ‘there are enough things to cry about in Hong Kong, besides films.’ However, for my next film, I think I'm going to make a tragic love film.
