부천시장, 홍건표님께, 저는 엔리크 폴치라고 합니다. <시간의 도망자들>(Tempus Fugit)이라는 영화를 만들어 많은 영화제에 초청을 받은 적이 있는 스페인 영화감독입니다. PiFan이 없어진다는 얘기를 듣고 제가 얼마나 놀라고 충격을 받았는지 말씀드리고 싶습니다. PiFan은 제가 참가해본 것들 가운데 양적, 질적 측면에서 최고의 인력과 영화를 갖춘 영화제 중 하나일 뿐 아니라 조직 면에서도 아주 잘 정비된 영화제입니다. 나와 동료들은 작년 7월 PiFan에 게스트로 참가하고서 부천의 영화적 수준과 스탭들의 능력에 깊은 감동을 받았습니다. 스페인의 많은 영화인들이 PiFan을 알고 있으며, PiFan은 저와 같은 서구 사람들이 동양의 영화계와 소통할 수 있는 통로이자 양질의 상징입니다. 당신의 결정을 재고해 주실 것을 부탁드립니다. 그리고 이 훌륭한 영화제의 영혼이었던 집행위원장과 프로그래머들과 함께 PiFan을 다시 살려주십시오.

Dear HONG Geon-pyo, mayor of Bucheon City, My name is Enric Folch. I am an Spanish filmaker whose film TEMPUS FUGIT has been selected for quite a few festivals. I must tell you how surprised and shocked I am on the news of Pifan's ending. Not only Pifan is one of the best festival's I' ve attended -both quality and quantity of films and people- but may be the better organised. Me and my colleague guests attended PIFAN last july and I can guarantee you that all of them without exception left Puchon very impressed by the organiser's work and the level of films. Many professionals know about PIFAN in Spain, which is a trademark of quality and a gate to link western people like me with the eastern professionals of filmaking. I beg you to reconsider you decision and bring PIFAN to life again, along with his director and programmers, who have been the soul of a magnifiscent film event

부천시장님께, 부천영화제 집행위원장 김홍준과 프로그래머 김영덕, 김도혜, 손소영 등이 해산됐다는 소식은 너무 슬프고 믿기지도 않습니다. PiFan을 (판타지)영화에 대한 관심이 거의 없는 다른 성격의 행사로 바꾸려 한다는 당신의 계획은, 부천영화제가 부천시와 서울시를 넘어서서 전세계적으로 사랑받고 존경받게끔 한 지난 8년간의 믿을 수 없는 엄청난 노고와 완벽히 대조를 이루는 것처럼 보이는 군요. 저는 지난 2002년과 2004년 PiFan 게스트로 두 번 초대받아 가는 영광을 누렸는데, 진심으로 말해서 그토록 훌륭한 분위기와 친절함, 그토록 훌륭한 일꾼들(특히 자원봉사자들!)과 그토록 인상적인 라인업, 그토록 놀라운 해외게스트들 선별까지를 갖춘 영화제는 이제껏 참석해본 적이 없습니다. 이 모든 대단한 성과들을 부정한다는 것은, PiFan을 지난 8년동안에 일궈낸 대단한 행사보다 못한 것으로 만든다는 건, 부끄러운 일입니다. 제발 옳은 선택을 하십시오!

To Mr. Hong, mayor of Bucheon, It is with sadness and disbelief that I received the news about the dismissal of the director of the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, Mr. Hong-Joon Kim, and his programmers, Ms. Ellen Kim, Ms. Creta Kim and Ms. Michelle Sohn. To me, your plans to transform PiFan into a completely different festival with little attention for (fantastic)films, seem to be in stark contrast with the incredible work that has been done over the past eight years by the PiFan staff with the creation of a truly international film festival that has become respected and loved not only by the people of Puchon and Seoul but all over the world. Having had the honour of being a guest at PiFan twice - in 2002 and 2004 - I can honestly state that I have never attended a film festival with such great atmosphere and friendliness, such great people working for it (especially the volunteers!), such an impressive film line-up and such an amazing selection of (international) guests. It would be a shame if all these great achievements were to be denied - and if PiFan were to be reduced to anything less of the incredible event it has become over the past eight years. Please do the right thing!

여러분, 전세계 영화를 사랑하는 사람들이라면 가야할 곳. 이것이 제가 PiFan에 대해 생각할 때 떠오르는 말입니다. 김홍준 집행위원장과 세 명의 프로그래머들, 그리고 모든 친절한 자원봉사자들의 노고로, 부천영화제는 다양함과 양질을 추구하는 영화관객들에게 기쁨의 원천이 돼 왔습니다. 그리고 나같은 해외 언론인들에게는 진귀하고 독창적인 영화를 발견할 수 있는 기회였을 뿐 아니라 기사를 통해 새로운 한국영화를 내 나라에 알릴 수도 있는 기회였습니다. 그런 영화제와 그 영화제의 특별하고 따뜻한 분위기가 여오하에 대해 쥐뿔도 모르는 늙은 정치인들 때문에 파괴돼 버린다니, 지난 모든 노력들을 싸그리 지우는 일이로군요. 받아들일 수 없습니다. 부천영화제가 죽어 매장된다면 그 정신을 살리도록 해봅시다. 판타스틱 영화제가 열릴만한 자격이 있는 다른 곳에서 새로운 영화제를 만드는 일을 강하게 지지합니다. PiFan의 정신은 죽지 않으리!

Dear all, The festival where all movie lovers from around the world should go. These are the words that come to my mind when I think about PIFAN. With the hard works of the festival director Mr Kim and the programmers Ellen Kim, Creta Kim and Michelle Sohn (including also all the kind volunteers), PIFAN has always been a source of joy for the audience who can find diversity and quality. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for international journalists like me not only to discover rare and original movies but also to help through articles - to spread new Korean cinema in our countries. Destroying this festival and its so particular mood and warm atmosphere - just because of old politicians who know nothing about entertainment - is like erasing all these previous efforts. It!/s simply unacceptable. If PIFAN is dead and buried, then let!/s keep alive together its spirit. I give you my strong support to create a new fantastic festival in another town that really deserves it. The spirit of PIFAN shall never die!

시장님께, 부천국제판타스틱영화제의 조직 전체가 해산됐다는 말을 듣고 우리가 얼마나 당황했는지 알려드리고 싶습니다. 우리 영화제는 PiFan 팀과의 절친한 관계를 통해 한국영화의 많은 부분을 이해해왔고 한국 최고의 영화인들과도 접촉을 해올 수 있었습니다. 작년까지도 우리는 PiFan을 아시아 판타지 영화를 만날 수 있는 중요한 창구로 여겼습니다. 벨기에와 유럽의 많은 감독들이 그 영화제를 통해 자신들의 영화를 소개할 수 있어서 영광이었습니다. 이것이 얼마나 중요한가도 많은 기회를 통해 증명되었습니다. 영화제 규모를 지역행사규모로 축소하겠다는 결정은 부천영화제가 쌓아온 국제적인 중요성을 무시하는 처사입니다. 이미 우리는 이것이 세계 문화계를 향한 엄청난 손실이라고 느끼며 부천시의 국제적인 이미지에도 영향을 끼칠 것이라고 확신합니다. 불행하게도 당신의 결정에 유감을 표할 수밖에 없으며 부천영화제 팀의 향후 행보에 지지를 보낼 것을 재확인하는 바입니다. 준비 중인 행사가 당신의 새로운 목표에 부합하기를 바랍니다. 우리로서는 세계 다른 많은 영화제들과 함께, 혈족을 잃은 심정일 따름입니다.

Dear Mister Mayor, With this letter we would like to express our dismay about the dismissal of the entire organizing team of the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. The close ties between our festival and the PiFan team have played a big part in our perception of Korean cinema and have allowed us to get in touch with the best and brightest of the Korean cinematographic profession. Until last year, we considered PiFan as an important window for Asian fantasy film and numerous directors, Belgian and European, had the honour to visit the festival to present their films. At many occasions, they have testified of the importance of this manifestation. With your decision to downsize?the festival to a more local level, you seem to ignore the international importance that PiFan had taken on. We already feel this to be a great loss for the global cultural scene and we are convinced that this will also affect the international image of your city. Unfortunately, we can only regret your decision and confirm once more our support for the henceforth old team of the Puchon Festival. We hope that the event you are preparing will meet your new objectives. For our part, as with many other festivals in the world, we can only feel deprived of a kindre manifestation.

홍건표 시장님께, 저는 프랑스 기자이며 2004년 PiFan에 참가했던 Rurik Salle라고 합니다. 영화제를 취재하고 사람들을 인터뷰하면서 영화제에서 제공하는 수많은 환상적인 이벤트에 참여했습니다. 저는 프로그래머들과 집행위원장을 비롯해 그 곳에서 만난 모든 관계자들이 갖고 있는 에너지와 선한 의지에 굉장히 놀랐고, 수많은 자원봉사자들이 이 커다란 행사가 열릴 수 있도록 도우면서 스스로 기뻐하는 모습에 놀랐습니다. 부천에서의 열흘 동안 직업적인 수확도 거뒀지만 대단한 문화와 사람들을 만나는 경험을 했습니다. 그래서 이번 해에도 굉장한 즐거움을 갖고 참석할 예정이었으나...어떻게 된 거죠? 집행위원장과 프로그래머들이 해고됐다고요? 우리는 모두 양질의 영화 프로그램과 자유 정신, 그리고 개성을 만나러 PiFan에 갔습니다. 시장님, 그게 두렵던가요? 세계적으로 유명한 영화제가 도시를 망치기라도 한다고 생각했습니까? PiFan에 와서 즐기던 한국의 수천 명의 관객들은 또 어쩔건가요? 작년에 PiFan에 왔던 게스트들을 확인해봤나요? 요르그 부트게라이트(독일, 감독), 로이드 카우프만(미국, 프로듀서/감독), 스튜어트 고든(미국, 프로듀서/감독), 강대위(홍콩, 전설적인 배우) 등 세계적으로 유명한 영화인들과 세계 각국의 수백 명의 사람들이 왔었습니다. 그게 무슨 뜻인지 아시겠습니까?

그건 PiFan이 전세계의 모든 판타지 영화 팬들을 위한 중요한 행사라는 뜻입니다. 저같은 영화인들이 수천 킬로미터를 날아와서라도 참여해야할 만큼 중요한 행사라는 뜻입니다. PiFan이 있기 전에는 우리는 부천에 대해 알지도 못했습니다. PiFan이 있었기 때문에 부천시는 지도 위에 표시될 수 있었고, PiFan이 있었기 때문에 부천이 서울이나 부산 만큼 유명한 도시가 될 수 있었습니다. PiFan은 한국과 부천시에, 그리고 전세계 영화계에 반드시 필요합니다. 하지만 조건이 하나 필요합니다. 지금까지 그래온 것처럼 훌륭한 자유 정신, 열린 마음, 판타지 영화 중심의 행사로 남아야한다는 것이죠. 그래서 편지를 씁니다. 영화를 사랑하는 사람으로서, 한국을 사랑하는 사람으로서(한국에서 어린이를 가르치는 선생으로 일한 적도 있답니다) PiFan이 과거의 모습을 지켜내기를 바랍니다. 그렇지 않으면 더이상 부천이란 곳에 대해 신경쓸 일도 없습니다. 우린 그 훌륭한 인력들이 몸담았던 예전 그대로의 PiFan을 사랑합니다.

판타지 영화의 세계는 꿈과 희망과 신비와 이야기와 놀라움과 흥미진진한 것들로 가득합니다. PiFan을 변변찮고 평범한 초짜 영화제로 바꾸지 말아 주십시오. PiFan은 특별합니다. 그리고 지금까지 그 영화제를 맡아왔던 사람들처럼 특별한 사람들을 필요로 합니다. 많은 관객들과 기자들과 감독들과 배우들(알다시피, 박찬욱, 김지운, 봉준호, 허진호, 최민식, 문소리, 설경구, 송강호 등)이 그런 것처럼 저는, 영화제를 책임지고 있던 사람들을 해고한 최근 당신의 결정이 영화제 자체에 대한 우리의 관심도 죽일 것임을 알아주셨으면 합니다. PiFan을 지구상에서 가장 훌륭한 영화 축제로 남기고 싶다면, 당신도 어떻게 해야할 지 알고 있을 겁니다. 영화제를 죽이고 싶다면 그렇게 하시죠. 그럼 당신은 영화계의 모든 이들을 실망시키게 될 겁니다. 독창성을 살려두세요.

Dear Mr. HONG Geon-pyo, My name is Rurik Salle, a french reporter that attended PiFan 2004. I was here covering the festival, interviewing people, enjoying the many, many events that this fantastic (in all ways) event had to offer. I was highly suprised by the energy and good will of all the people involved, from the programmers and head staff that I got to meet, to the hundreds of volunteers that were obviously thrilled and enjoying so much helping that big event out. The 10 days I spent there were more than professionnally positive : they were a great cultural and human experience as well.I was getting ready with a great pleasure to come back this year but.. ...What happened ? I learned that Mr. Kim, festival director, as well as the three programmers, have been fired ? We all came to PiFan for its high quality programming, its free spirit, its personality. Does that scare you Mr. Mayor ? Do you think such a world-famous festival is hurting your city ? Do you think it's such a good idea to turn a major film event into a family outdoor event ? How about the thousands and thousands of Korean people of all ages, who came and enjoyed PiFan as it was? Have you checked out who came to PiFan last year ? World-famous movie people like Jorg Buttgereit (director, Germany), Lloyd Kaufman (producer/director, USA), Stuart Gordon (producer/director, USA), David Chiang (acting legend, Hong kong), and hundreds of others from all over the world... Do you get what that means? It means PiFan is an event that counts, for all fantastic movie fans over the world, for all professionnal that travel thousands of kilometers, like me, to attend this event. We didn't know about Bucheon before PiFan. PiFan put your city on the map. PiFan made Bucheon as famous as Seoul or Pusan, for us all. PiFan is essential to Korea and your city, and the entire film world. But, it's essential under one condition : that it remains this great free-spirited, open-minded, fantastic films-oriented event that it was until now. This is why I'm telling you, as a film lover, as a lover of Korea (I even worked there as a teacher for kids once) : keep PiFan the way it used to be, or we all won't care about it anymore. We all love PiFan the way it was, with all these great people involved. The fantastic movie world is a world of dreams, hope, mysteries, tales, a lot of wonderful and exciting things. Don't turn PiFan into a basic, trivial, ordinary festival. PiFan is unique, and it requires to be held by un ique people like the ones who were in charge of it until now. Like so many audience members, reporters, filmmakers and actors (including, but you know it, Korean directors Park Chan-wook, Kim Jee-woon, Bong Joon-ho, Hur Jin-ho, and actors Choi Min-shik, Moon So-ri, Sol Kyung-gu, and Song Kang-ho) I hope you'll understand that your recent decision of firing the people in charge of the festival will destroy our interest in the festival itself. If you want to keep PiFan one of the greatest movie events on earth, you know what to do. If you w ant to kill it, then you will disappoint everyone in the industry. Keep the creativity alive.

프로그래머들과 PiFan에게 그간 부천영화제에서 저의 영화 2편이 상영되었던 것을 영광으로 생각합니다. 지난 1998년 겨울, 부천을 알게 되고, 모든 게스트들과 만나 한국의 영화 산업에 대해 알게 되었던 것은 매우 특별한 경험이었습니다. 또한 부천 관객의 따뜻한 성원 속에 양질의 독창적인 영화들을 볼 수 있어서 매우 놀랐습니다. 영화제에 닥치고 있는 변화에 대해 들었습니다. 이젠 전처럼 환상적이고 전복적이지는 않겠군요. 부천시는 진지한 영화제가 아닌 '소박한 동네잔치'를 원하는 것으로 전 이해했습니다. 여러분이 준비하고 있는 게 어떤 건가요? 미래에 진정한 영화 축제에서 즐겁게 만납시다.

Dear Programmers of PIFAN, It was a great honor to be selected two times at your festival. It was a unique experience to be invited and discover Puchon, all your guests and the south Korean movie industry in december 1998. I was surprised by the quality and the originality of the selection and almost by the warm enthousiasm of the audience from Puchon. I just heard about the changes going on for this festival. I'm afraid that nothing will be as before : fantastic and subversive. I understood that the city of Puchon wants to organize "a folkloric event" and not a serious movie festival. Dear Programmers of PiFan, this is Davide Cazzaro, Italian researcher on Korean Cinema and co-managing editor of the Italian website www.cinemacoreano.it; As a press member and first of all as a sincere supporter of Korean cinema and its industry, you can imagine my reaction to the news I read about PiFan. I attended the last two years festival's editions and I had the chance to write a brief history of the festival; I finished my article writing: The future? Bright. PiFan succeeds because it meets the tastes of the audience, it's programmed by critics and scholars, it offers every year a great variety of movies and it has never had any aspiration to showbiz glitz or star power. PiFan succeed in many ways and it gave to the Korean and foreign people some wonderful moments. It's very sad to see that, as also happen sometimes in Italy, also in Korea the rules allow the politicians to directly infulence or even destroy some important and unique events like it was PiFan. Sadly enough Mayor Hong Geon-pyo confirmed that for many majors around the world the first worry is not the city they'd take care of but their own career and selfishness. It's my sincere hope that you'll be able to build another real fantastic film festival in Korea. You have all my support, Puchon probably didn't deserve an event like (P)iFan, that's why I put the first letter between parenthesis; I wish that as soon as possible, the same team will work again all together and the initial letter of another Korean city can replace the actual "P"... for the sake of Korean culture.
