후루하타 야스오 감독(67)은 사실 의외의 카드. 영화제 쪽은 장편 경쟁부문 심사위원장으로 기발한 상상력보다 사실적인 드라마를 정공법으로 구사해 온 일본 감독을 내세웠다. 도쿄대 불문과를 졸업하고, 1957년부터 72년까지 도에이영화사에서 일했으며, 지난 66년 <비행소녀 요코>로 데뷔한 뒤 지금까지 약 40편의 영화를 만들어왔다. 국내에 소개된 작품으로는 <철도원>과 올해 개봉한 <무사> 두 편. 고희를 앞둔 노 감독은 도착하자마자 이어진 기자회견과 인터뷰 등으로 피곤했는지 다소 짧은 답변으로 응수했지만, 중간중간 웃음기를 내보이며 “늦게 온만큼 남은 영화제 기간 동안 부지런히 뛰겠다”고 약속했다.

영화제 개막 행사에 참가하지 못했는데. 그 덕에 심사위원인 로이드 카우프만이 무대에서 익살과 너스레를 떨어 인기를 끌었다. 지금 일본에서 개봉중인 신작 <호타루>의 홍보 행사 일정 때문에 미리 오지 못했다. 5일 동안 경쟁작 9편을 모두 보고 다른 심사위원들과 논의를 해야 하는데, 오자마자 연속된 일정 때문에 아직 한 편도 못 봤다.

판타스틱영화제 심사위원장 제의를 받고서 어땠나. 지난 4월쯤 전해 들었는데, 결정하기 힘들었다. 내가 어떻게 뽑히 게 됐는지, 지금도 잘 모르겠다.(웃음) 다른 사람들이 어떻게 받아들일지 궁금하다. 특히 한국 관객들이.

당신이 심사위원장을 맡은 것 자체가 ‘판타스틱’한 일 같다. 그렇게 받아주니 고맙다. 내년 부천영화제에 내가 직접 만든 판타스틱 영화를 들고 나오면 더 환상적이겠지.(웃음)

기자 회견에서 판타지와 현실의 경계는 없다고 했는데. 현실에 없는 걸 만들어내는 게 판타지라고 생각하지 않는다. 판타지는 현실에, 일상에 묻혀 있는 것이다. 다만 눈에 쉽게 띄지 않을 뿐이다. 그걸 발견하고 캐내는 과정에서 판타스틱한 영화가 나온다고 본다. 현실없는 판타지 영화는 없다. 그런 의미에서 내 영화 <철도원>도 굉장히 판타스틱하지 않나? 절망에 빠진 현실의 아버지가 죽은 딸의 모습을 떠올리면서 삶을 버텨내니까.

심사원칙이 있다면. 아직 다른 심사위원들과 구체적인 이야기를 나누지 못했다. 심사위원들마다 각기 다른 의견들을 내놓겠지만, 공통 분모는 재미와 감동, 두가지일 것 같다. 개인적으로 관객과 같이 호흡하는 영화들을 좋아한다.

수상 결과를 폐막식 이전에 알려줄 수 있나. 그러면 고맙겠다. 불가능하다는 걸 알면서 왜 묻나. 그러면 집행위원장에게 혼난다.(웃음)

"Fantasy Dwells in Reality?"

Feature Film Jury Chairman Yasuo Furuhata

Director Yasuo Furuhata(67), a portrayer of realistic dramas rather than uniquely creative ideas, was an unexpected surprise coming from PiFan as the Chairman of Jury for Feature Films. Graduating from Tokyo University department of French literature, Furuhata worked for Toei from 1957 to 1972. In 1966 he made his debut with , and since then made about 40 films of which two, and , were introduced in Korea. Wave after wave of press conferences and interviews upon his arrival, the obviously exhausted director? responses were short, but not without from-time-to-time smile. "As to my late arrival, I'll do whatever is necessary to for the rest of the festival to make up for it,"was his promise.

As to your late arrival?

I couldn't get here earlier because of my schedule in Japan with , my new film. I? supposed to review all nine films in five days and discuss them with the other panel members, but with my hectic schedule here, I haven? seen even one yet.

What was your response to the Chairman of Jury proposition?

I first got the word three months ago, and it was very difficult to decide. I still don't know up to this date how I was pointed for the position. I? actually wondering as to how others are responding to the matter, especially the Korean audience.

You being the Chairman of Jury is "fantastic" itself.

Thank you. If I can return next year with a ?antastic?film of my own, that would be fantastic.

Your comment regarding fantasy and reality having no boundaries during the press conference?

I don't think creating what doesn't exist is a fantasy. Fantasy dwells in reality and the daily routines. It? just difficult to conceive with the naked eye. In the process of find out what that is, real fantasy can be found. There? no fantasy without reality. In that sense, isn't. "fantastic?" A destituted father barely holding on to reality in memory of his dead daughter.

Any principles on the judgement?

I have not been able to talk to any of the other judges, and they would each have their opinions, but the common ground would be fun and the power to move. I personally prefer films that can sympathize with the audience.

Would you be able clue us to results of the finale? You know that's impossible, and besides, if I do, the Festival Director would be furious. (chuckles)
